Giardini NaxosThe Sicilians tell this city just Giardini. It is located close to Taormina, on the coast of the Ionian Sea, halfway between Messina and Catania. Place for sea and relaxation, but also culture and history if you want to know the places you collect tan.

The bay of Naxos is one of the best places in Italy where you can indulge in relaxation under the sun. Besides beach bars and areas with sun beds and umbrellas, here you will find plenty of free beach.

History in five rows
The city was founded by the ancient Greeks from the island of Euboea and Naxos (hence the name). Curiously, when Dionysius, tyrant of Syracuse attacked the town and sold into slavery most of its inhabitants, save hid on Mount Taurus and created today’s Taormina. Around 2000 years there was quiet until about 500 years appeared several guard towers and the city is not separated from Taormina under the name of Giardini Naxos (Giardini comes from the Italian word for gardens – because citrus groves that cover the hills).

The remains of the ancient Naxos not much – a few basalt walls along the river Santa Venera, and several tombs of BC. The museum of Giardini Naxos you can see artifacts from excavations in the area, including a bowl with ornaments of about 7000 years.

What to eat in Giardini Naxos
Local cuisine relies on fresh caught seafood and fish. Stuffed sardines, seafood salads, rolls swordfish – not give either of these. Do not forget to add a cup of the famous Sicilian wines. Each year in late June or early July there is a festival of seafood.
